When I left the home, on the day arranged with the Anti-Violence Center and social workers, I did not look back. I had begun to hate that house; the last five years had been hell. I never once turned to see what I was leaving behind. I only wanted to start a new life. I felt I was finally doing something for myself. When they gave me the keys to this new house, it was as if, for the first time, something belonged only to me. I didn’t even change the keychain; I left everything as it was.
