In black and white.
That’s how I would like to present to you the artists who filled the theatres, the squares, and the city during the 2022 Festival. That’s how we portrayed them — so that their gestures and gazes could express their most intimate selves. It’s in those eyes that I recognize the burning flame of their creativity — when I meet them, when they speak to me about their projects — and it’s that flame that captivates me and convinces me to present them to you.
In the beautiful images that follow — the work of photographer Ilaria Magliocchetti, which also pays tribute to the Festival’s historic photographic heritage — the most emotionally charged traits emerge. The tilt of a head, the position of hands and body convey more than what is seen: an attitude, a feeling, a desire.
And so, as you turn these pages, you’ll find the story of an edition that rekindled the bond between the two sides of the ocean — a connection that Gian Carlo Menotti always championed — but above all, one that celebrated female talent.
Everyone will remember the extraordinary Barbara Hannigan, the queen of this edition, and alongside her, the many great women who became icons: Angélique Kidjo, Mariza, and Dianne Reeves in Piazza Duomo with their special concerts for Spoleto; choreographers Germaine Acogny, founder of École des Sables, Blanca Li, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, and director Jeanne Candel.
Could we ever forget the magnificent Sacre du Printemps danced by a company of African performers? The future unfolds before a new generation of choreographers: Alexander Vantournhout, Ayelen Parolin, Luz Arcas, and Yoann Bourgeois — rising stars of the new international dance scene.
It is a joy to see here again the German director Thomas Ostermeier, as well as the faces of both established and emerging Italian playwrights — from Fabio Cherstich to Leonardo Lidi, from Davide Enia to the duo RezzaMastrella — who have accompanied our days in Spoleto.
